What a sewer scope actually finds
A sewer scope inspection feeds a specialized camera through the sewer lateral — the line connecting the home to the municipal sewer or septic system. It reveals cracks, offset joints, root intrusion, corrosion, and blockages that are completely invisible from a standard walkthrough inspection.
Why older homes are more at risk
Homes built decades ago often have clay, cast iron, or early PVC sewer lines that degrade over time. Mature trees — common in many established Las Vegas neighborhoods — send roots seeking moisture, and sewer lines are a prime target. By the time a slow drain or backup shows up inside the home, the underlying damage can already be extensive.
Why it's worth the extra cost
Sewer line repairs or replacements can run into the thousands of dollars, often requiring excavation. A sewer scope, priced at $250 stand-alone or $225 when bundled with a home inspection, is a small cost relative to the risk it helps you avoid — and it gives you real negotiating leverage if an issue is found before closing.
When to consider one
We generally recommend a sewer scope for homes over 20 years old, homes with mature trees near the sewer line, or any property where the seller can't confirm the condition or material of the sewer line.
